Dougald T. Calhoun
Dougald T. Calhoun, born October 4, 1958, in Fairfield, California, embarked on his next chapter, traveling peacefully beyond this life at the home of his friends in Edwardsville, Illinois. His life was rich with experience, love, laughter, and a little bit of silliness — just the way he lived it.
Raised across the globe — from Norman, Oklahoma, to Okinawa and Korea, and later in Arizona, California, Arkansas, Colorado, and Illinois— Dougald had a heart for adventure. He loved to travel and spent many years exploring the cultures and landscapes of Central and South America, as well as mining opals in Australia. His wanderlust was matched only by his curiosity and kindness.
He was the beloved son of Dougald T. Calhoun Sr. (preceded in death) and Jackie Louise, and a devoted brother to his younger sisters, Amanda and Miranda Calhoun. He was a loving uncle to his nephew, Kyle, and nieces Casey, Leah, Ciera, and Keila, and a proud great-uncle to Issiah, Andrew, and Cannon. Dougald’s greatest joy was meeting his son, Ian, whom he loved deeply.
Throughout his life, Dougald wore many hats — miner, jewelry store owner, window cleaner, buyer and seller of curious treasures — but the role he embraced most fully was that of caretaker. Whether tending to family, friends, or those in need, he was a steady and compassionate presence. He lived to help others and did so with quiet humility and deep devotion.
He was also delightfully goofy — quick to crack a joke, always ready to make someone smile, and playfully resistant to being tickled. Dougald had a special gift for bringing light into a room and reminding others not to take life too seriously.
Kind, loving, and deeply loyal, Dougald lived in service to others, always giving more than he took. His legacy is one of generosity, humor, and heart. Though he has moved on, his spirit lives in every act of kindness inspired by his memory, and in the laughter he so freely gave.
He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
El Dorado
– Edgar Allan Poe
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old,
This knight so bold,
And o’er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow;
“Shadow,” said he,
“Where can it be,
This land of Eldorado?”
“Over the mountains
Of the moon,
Down the valley of the shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,”
The shade replied,–
“If you seek for Eldorado!”
